Type Locality and Naming
Zhang Quanzhong and Jiao Shiding proposed the Houjiatang Fm in 1982. The type section is located at Houjiatang, Tangshan in Jiangning County, about 20 km odd east of the Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.
Synonym: (侯家塘组)
Lithology and Thickness
It is composed of yellow green shale and silty shale intercalated with thin-bedded micritic sandstone. The lower part includes 1 to 2 layers of purplish red shale.

It conformably contacts with the underlying Gaojiabian Fm

It is exposed in the areas of south Jiangsu and east Anhui.

Fossils
The Houjiatang Fm is 122 m in thickness and rare in fossils except the graptolite Hunanodendrum typicum and brachiopod Lingula? sp. from the yellowish green shale.
